Schindler’s List (originally published as Schindler’s Ark) by Thomas Keneally is a historical novel based on the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who saved the lives of over 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust. The novel, blending fact and fiction, chronicles Schindler’s transformation from a profit-driven businessman to a humanitarian who risks everything to protect his Jewish workers from Nazi extermination.
At the start of World War II, Schindler, a member of the Nazi Party, arrives in Kraków, Poland, seeking to profit from the war. He acquires an enamelware factory, employing Jewish workers because they are cheaper than Polish laborers. Initially, his focus is on wealth and influence, but as he witnesses the brutal treatment of Jews, particularly during the liquidation of the Kraków Ghetto and the horrors of the Plaszów labor camp under the ruthless commandant Amon Goeth, his conscience is awakened.
Determined to save as many Jews as possible, Schindler uses his fortune and connections to bribe Nazi officials, ensuring that his factory workers are classified as essential laborers and thus spared from deportation to death camps. As the war nears its end, he compiles "Schindler’s List"—a roster of Jewish workers whom he transfers to a new factory in Brünnlitz, Czechoslovakia, where they are shielded from execution.
Despite his heroism, Schindler loses his wealth and must flee to avoid retribution as a former Nazi. After the war, he is recognized for his extraordinary efforts, and many of the survivors he saved remember him with deep gratitude.
Keneally’s novel, written in a documentary-style narrative, powerfully depicts the horrors of the Holocaust while highlighting the impact of individual moral courage. It is a moving testament to Schindler’s legacy and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable evil.
